Cloud Migration

Moving the entire IT Infrastructure from On-Premise to Public cloud was a historical and BOLD decision approved by the board.

(1) conversion of Traditional and Legacy applications

(2) Introducing New Features,

(3) Enabling Working platform from Anywhere/Mobile/Remote

(4) Enabling business continuity and disaster recovery,

(5) Developing Strong Security Resilience on Public cloud

(6) and all above with reducing the cost

The Business Requirement was identified as;

  • Business Growth with Business Continuity Plan and Disaster Recovery
  • Along with the Cost Reduction and
  • Working Flexibility/Mobility from the world.
    • Data Migration was the biggest challenge we faced since organization has almost 40TB of data which require to be uploaded once to make services live on AWS, Bandwidth was the constraint
    • Legacy Applications was not cloud infrastructure compatible
    • Short Span of time, the migration of critical servers was targeted
    • Lake of skill and required knowledge within the IT team
    1. AWS considered a Cloud Infrastructure Service Provider,
    2. Reliance JIO along with Tata Communications was considered as Internet Bandwidth provider partner
    3. One of Group Company as SI partner considered for this implementation

We actually use all below AWS suggested Migration processes like

(a) Lift and Shift

(b) Reform and Shift

(d) Refactor and Shift

(e) Re-Shape and Sift

(f) Retire non-utilizing components

Which gave good success to the progress and yes, so now we can say the business is completely on the cloud.

At the same time the exiting infrastructure on-premise, it was identified as a bottleneck for the targeted business growth, The Cloud Services was the best option to consider.

Last December 2019, finally the project "Cloud Migration" has been come out with approval from the boardroom with the phase-wise implementation plan.

After a detailed analysis of what is exists, what are the future requirements and so what will be on the cloud? mapping with each component including tightened up the data security.

Many of the awareness and training sessions have been planned and delivered to all the users before we initiated the migration to the cloud. We considered the south AP region for all the infrastructure since the Indian govt. Pushes towards the primary data to remain in India only.

With the help of the Internal Group company being a reseller of AWS, the project got completed and implemented in June 2020 (Within 6 Months) The phase has been decided and we moved the first business-critical systems to the cloud-first and so on. till the archival of the old data to deep archival storage of S3 on AWS.

We actually use all below AWS suggested Migration processes like

(a) Lift and Shift

(b) Reform and Shift

(3) Refactor and Shift

(4) Re-Shape and Sift

(5) Retire non-utilizing components

Along with the Components like EC2, S3, ELB, Rout53, RDBMS, and KMS, Encryption, Cloud Watch, Cloud Trail, Fortinet Firewall, Fortinet EWS, Fortinet, Multifactor Authentication, Fortinet SSL VPN towards the data security

For particular Security aspect

  1. Access Control through Fortinet Multifactor Authentication (Over and Above Firewall, AD and Particular system Login credentials)
  2. Data Encryption from endpoint
  3. Data in Transit (with SSL VPN)
  4. Data at Rest on AWS with Encrypted form till S3 and Deep Archive Storage as well
  5. EC2 Images and snapshots of the instances are encrypted with AWS KMS
  6. For the IOT, we have considered NIST NISTIR 8259,8228 & SP 800-53 as a reference to establish the mechanism which includes the end-user training as well.

The Best Benefit we got is during the Lock-down,

  • The business was running smooth,
  • Customers Delighted with the continuation of seamless services.
  • It got converted in rapid ROI for this migration
  • Started Saving on cost since the upfront investment has been
  • removed completely.
  • Further future Projects are likely to be initiated on the cloud now with
  • this success

The Best Benefits to the IT department was

  • Learning and Hands-on Latest Technology
  • Relief from critical downtime and call flows for the server
  • Save on IT costs
  • Stress level is reduced of IT team
  • Being a Human Centric Organization, reduction of manpower was not
  • a target, so the team is now focusing on Improvement areas towards
  • enabling users and so business
  • Of course, they become more productive since they also can work from Anywhere

The success of the infrastructure migration to the cloud has actually enabled businesses to

(1) now focus on the IOT implementation on our products and enable them with the AI/ML on IOT data so that customers also can get benefits of the same.

(2) This becomes significant to the RND team and the development of the new products as well, this will surely disrupt the market and will be resulted in tremendous business growth.

(3) Many of the employees are now decided to work from their own home remotely with flexible working hours and so the productivity will be increased and give good business growth.... 🙂
